3 Week Challenge, Day 2

Passage: Matthew 2 (The Visit of the Magi, The Escape to Egypt, The Return to Nazareth)

Memory Verse: "17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" -2 Corinthians 5:17

Notes:
-(v.7-8)Herod called the Magi (wise men) to find out where Jesus was born and to kill him (out of jealousy)
-(v.12): The Lord has always protected; the Magi were warned in a dream to not return to Herod
-God can speak through dreams (v. 12, 13, 19, 22)
-Joseph still a man of obedience to His commands
-4 prophecies were fulfilled through Jesus's birth:
1. (v.6) a shepherd of Israel coming from Bethlehem (ref. Micah 5:2)
2. (v.15) the Lord said; "out of Egypt I called my son" (ref. Hosea 11:1)
3. (v.17) prophet Jeremiah--on the killing of innocent children by Herod's orders;
"Rachel weeping for her children" (ref. Jeremiah 13:15)
4. (v.23) "he will be called a Nazarene" (referring to Jesus Christ)
-Where is Nazareth?

  1. Hi, Eleanor! I meant to post this ages ago and saved it on my computer but completely forgot about it! Anyways, here are some thoughts I had after I read your post last week:

    Solomon was not the son born from their adultery. That child died and Solomon was born after David married Bathsheba. I don't know what commentators say about this, but I think it's awesome how God shows His mercy and grace in this situation. David did have other sons, but God chose the "unlikely" son to be part of His redemptive work. Often God chooses people who are seemingly not the best choice but that just shows how His strength is made perfect in our weakness. If you look at the other people listed in Jesus' genealogy, there's a deceiver (Jacob), a prostitute (Rahab), an adulterer (David), a foreigner (Ruth), and others that don't really seem like the ideal choice for such an important lineage. It's another example of God's amazing grace in people's lives.
