Memory Verse: "As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us" -Psalm 103:12
Notes: (v.1-20) John son of Zechariah received the word of God and he went and preached baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins all throughout the country. The words of Isaiah were fulfilled (ref. Isaiah 40:3-5). He preached bearing fruit in keeping with repentance; "the ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire." He told men with two tunics to share some with him who has none; tax collectors to collect only what is required; soldiers to be content with their pay and not accuse people falsely. The people wondered if John might possibly be the Christ, but John said that the one more powerful than him will come--the thongs of whose sandals he is not worthy to untie. John baptizes them with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
When John rebuked Herod the tetrarch, he locked John up in prison.
-(v.21-37) When Jesus was baptized the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him. A voice from heaven came down and said, "You are my son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
Jesus was about thirty when he began his ministry.
