Memory Verse: "You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8But God demonstrated his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." -Romans 5:6-8 [an addition to previously memorized verse Romans 5:3-5]
Notes: -(v.1-11) It was two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and teachers of the law were looking for a way to kill Jesus.
While Jesus was in Bethany, a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured onto Jesus' head. At this, some of the guests were indignant, accusing her of wasting good perfume that could have been sold for money to give to the poor. "They rebuked her harshly."
Hearing this, Jesus defended her by saying that she has done a beautiful thing: "the poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could."
"Wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."
Then, Judas Iscariot, one of the disciples, went to the chief priests and promised to betray Jesus for money.
-(v.12-26) Jesus and his disciples were getting ready for the Passover: he sent two of his disciples to go into the city and make preparations for him in the house of the man carrying a jar of water.
When evening came and Jesus was eating with the Twelve, he announced that one of the twelve, who were eating with him, will betray him. All the disciples denied it, but Jesus said that the one who dips bread into the bowl with me is the one who will betray Jesus.
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, and gave it to his disciples saying, "Take it' this is my body." Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and offered it to his disciples, saying, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many."
-(v.27-31) Jesus predicts that they will all fall away (ref. Zecheriah 13:7). Peter denied that he will ever fall away, but Jesus tells him that he will deny Jesus three times tonight, before the rooster crows. Peter still insisted that he will never disown Jesus.
-(v.32-42) Jesus went to Gethsemane, and told his disciples to sit while he went to pray. He was deeply distressed and troubled, and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. Jesus said, "Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. yet not what I will, but what you will."
When he returned, he found them sleeping and said, "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." Once again he went away and prayed, but they were sleeping again when he came back. Jesus told them to wake up because the Son of Man "is betrayed into the hands of sinners."
-(v.43-51) Judas appeared with a crowd armed with weapons, and told the chief priests that the one he kisses is the man to arrest. At once he went to Jesus, called out to him, and kissed him. The men seized Jesus and arrested him, but one of those standing near drew his sword and cut off a servant's ear.
-(v.53-65) When Jesus was brought before the high priest, the chief priests were looking for evidence against Jesus but could not find any. Many testified falsely against him, but their stories did not match up. Then the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
"I am," Jesus replied. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." At this, the priest called Jesus blasphemous and the crowed condemned him as worthy of death.
-(v.66-72) When Peter was in the courtyard, a servant girl came and claimed that Peter was with Jesus the Nazarene. Peter denied knowing Jesus.
At the entryway, the servant girl saw him and said to those around that he was one of the disciples. Again he denied it.
After a while, those near Peter said, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean." He swore to them that he didn't know Jesus.
Immediately, the rooster crowed and Peter remembered Jesus' words, and he wept.
