Luke 7

Passage: The Faith of the Centurion, Jesus Raises a Widow's Son, Jesus and John the Baptist, Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman

Notes: (v.1-10) A centurion, who was highly respected, sent some elders to plead with Jesus to heal the centurion's servant, who was about to die. Jesus went with them, and when he was not far from the house the centurion sent his friends to say to him, "Lord, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed." At this, Jesus was amazed at this man's faith, and he healed his servant.
-(v.11-17) When Jesus went to the town of Nain, he passed by a dead person being carried out--the only son of his widowed mother. WHen he saw her, his heart went out to her and he told her not to cry. Then he went up and touched the coffin and ordered the man to get up. The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
-(v.18-35) John the Baptist sent men to ask Jesus if he was the one who was to come, and Jesus replied, "Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me." Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John, identifying him as a prophet:"I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."
Jesus then compares the people of this generation to children in the marketplace.
-(v.36-50) The Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with them. When Jesus was reclining at the table, a sinful woman came in a brought a jar of perfume, which she poured onto Jesus' feet after she wet his feet with her tears. When the Pharisee saw this, he thought to himself that if Jesus were a prophet, he would know that she is a sinner. Jesus answered him by asking him a question: if two men owed money to a certain moneylender--one five hundred denarii and one fifty, who would be more grateful if the debts were cancelled? Simon replied, "the one with the bigger debt." Jesus then said, "Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."
