Memory Verse:"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." -Proverbs 3:5-6
Notes: (v.1) The Pharisees and Sadducees asked Jesus for a sign
-(v.2-4) Jesus replied that they knew how to interpret weather signs, but not the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but only the sign of Jonah will be given to them
Who are the Sadducees?
Sign of Jonah? Does Jesus mean that their own moral decay is a sign of the times?
-(v.5-12) Jesus warned the disciples against the "yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees," but initially the disciples thought Jesus was talking about not bringing enough bread. Jesus rebuked them by reminding them of His feeding of the 5,000 and 4,000 with just a few pieces of bread. Then they understood what Jesus was talking about
-(v.13-16) Jesus asks the disciples who people say the son of Man is, and who the they think Jesus is
(v.16-20) Simon Peter answered, "You are Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus says that Simon will be blessed and that the keys of the kingdom will be given to him
-(v.21-22) Jesus predicts his upcoming sufferings and his crucifixion, but Peter denies it
(v.23) Jesus answers him by telling Satan to "get behind him"
Why?
-(v.24028) to come after Jesus:
-Denying yourself and taking up your cross
-Losing your life for Christ so that you may save it
-What good is it to gain the whole world, yet lose your very soul? (ref. Luke 9:23-25)
Am I coming after Jesus?
