Memory Verse: "Do not let this Book of Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do everything in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful"-Joshua 1:8 [also an addition to/reminder of previously done verse Joshua 1:9]
Notes: (v.1-4) Jesus tells the crowd not to do what the Phraisees to" they do not practice what they preach"
-(v.5-11) Everything the Pharisees do is done for men; men call them "rabbi." However, we have only one Master and one Father and one Teacher" Christ. Therefore the greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
-(v.13-15) Woe to the hypocritical teachers, for they travel worldwide for a single convert, but make him "twice as much the son of hell"
-(v.16-22) The teachers do not swear by the altar or the temple, which make the gold and the gift sacred
-(v.23-24) The Pharisees give their spices, but neglect what is important: justice, mercy, and faithfulness.
-(v.25-28) They are beautiful on the outside but dirty on the inside:
"You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, ad then the outside also will be clean"
"You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. In the same way, you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness."
-(v.33-36) Jesus will send prophets and wise men and teachers, some of whom the Pharisees will kill and crucify and flog. Therefore the blood of the righteous will be upon them.
