Memory Verse: "Go and inquire of the Lord for me and for the people and for all Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the Lord's anger that burns against us because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written here concerning us" -2 Kings 22:13
Notes: (v.1-10) When the guards came and took Jesus away to be killed, Jesus returned the 30 silver coins in his remorse. They would not accept it, so he threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went and hanged himself. The chief priests used the money to buy a burial place for foreigners.
The words of the prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled (ref. Zechariah 11:12)
-(v.11-26) When Jesus was taken before Pilate, he confirmed that he was King of the Jews, and did not answer the accusations against him. It was custom to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd, and the crowd could choose between Barabbas, a notorious prisoner, or Jesus. Out of envy, the crowd chose Barrabas to be saved and Jesus to be crucified. Pilate's wife did not want anything to be done to Jesus, but as the crowd got louder, he handed Jesus over to the people. They had him flogged.
-(v.27-31) The soldiers stripped Jesus of his clothes and put a scarlet robe around him. They then twisted a crown of thorns and set it on his head, and mocked him by putting a staff in his right hand. They spit at him and struck him with the staff, and then put his own clothes back on him
-(v.32-44) As they were going out, they offered Jesus wine mixed with gall, but he refused to drink it. Then they placed "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews" above his head. Two robbers were crucified with him, one on each side of him.
Passersby mocked and insulted him, telling him to save himself with angels to prove that he is Son of God. The robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults at him
-(v.45-55) At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out to God, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" When he cried out again, he gave up his spirit.
At that moment, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth shook, and the rocks split. Tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died there were raised to life. They came out of the tombs and reappeared to many people
When the centurion saw all that had happened, they were terrified and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God!"
-(v.57-61) Joseph, who had been a disciple of Jesus, asked for Jesus' body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth. He placed the body in a new tomb and rolled a big rock in front of it.
-(v.62-66) The Pharisees ordered a guard to be at the tomb, for they remembered that Jesus claimed that He will rise again after three days
