Luke 19, 365 DAYS OF LOVE #12: BUY A CAKE

Passage: Zacchaeus the Tax Collector, The Parable of the Ten Minas, The Triumphal Entry, Jesus at the Temple

Memory Verse: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” -2 Corinthians 12:9

Notes: (v.1-10) Zacchaeus , a wealthy but short tax collector, saw Jesus coming and wanted to see him. Since he was too short, he climbed a fig tree just to see Jesus. When Jesus saw Zacchaeus, he welcomed him and told him to come down. At this, people began to mutter, accusing Jesus of being a guest of a 'sinner.' But Zacchaeus stood up and said that he will give half his possessions to the poor, and pay anybody he has cheated four times the amount. Then  Jesus proclaimed his salvation, "for the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."
-(v.11-27) Jesus told this parable:
A noble man became appointed king of a distant country, and he called his servants and gave them ten minas, ordering them to put this money to work. He then came back and asked to see what the servants had gained: the first servant earned ten more--the man in turn gave him charge of ten cities. The second servant earned five more, and was put in charge of five cities. But the third servant kept his mina away in a piece of cloth, for he was afraid of the king. The king then took his one mina and gave it to the one who has ten. "I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away."
What have I been doing with the minas given to ME?
-(v.28-44) Jesus told his disciples to go into the village and take a colt to bring to Jesus. If anyone asks, tell them that the Lord needs it. When they came back, Jesus rode along the colt and the people spread their cloaks on the road. A whole crowd of disciples began joyfully praising God, shouting, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" When the Pharisees saw this, they told Jesus to rebuke his disciples. But Jesus replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out" (wow!).

ACT OF LOVE: Today marked the last tutoring session that I have with Newton Education Center (the one that  I GET tutored at). In light of this momentous occasion, I decided to express my gratitude by buying a cake for my fobby tutor, Mr. Rei Pin. He is a relatively new tutor, having been here just a few months after the old physics tutor quit, but is quite brilliant. He is a Berkeley graduate and civil engineer, and a very hardworking tutor. Though there were times when getting tutored by him was difficult (because of his limited English and specificity of his job), he's one of the most thorough and dedicated tutors I know, and truly did his best to be a good mentor. Plus, he is the most polite man! So, my mom and I picked up a "thank you" cake from Jade's Bakery to give to him. Although this wasn't entirely spontaneous, it was a heartfelt act of gratitude from us.
ANDD..I wanted to share another act of love, but not by me. After we gave our tutor the cake, my mom also brought the manager some of the magazines that she edits. The manager had just moved from Asia, and was relatively new to the area and the business. Soon after, I overheard my mom sharing the gospel to her and telling her about Jesus. Later, I asked my mom what they talked about, and it turns out that the manager is REALLY interested in knowing God! She was very open to the gospel and kept wanting to know more and more. PRAISE THE LORD. Please pray for her when you can! And the tutor, too! I know one thing that I struggle with is being BOLD in the LORD, and truly challenging myself in loving others this way. It was a great encouragement to see my mom testify to her, and made me reevaluate myself to see if I was really living a life set apart for Christ.
